How to Choose the Right Lighting to Turn Your House into a Home

Kicking up your feet to rewind and relax in your cozy home sounds like the perfect way to end your long day. This, however, can be harder to achieve than it sounds if you don’t feel cozy and comfortable enough in your own home.

Luckily, the right lighting can turn your home into the coziest and warmest place on earth. It’s surprising how much good lighting can improve your home and make it more inviting for you and your guests.

If you don’t know how to choose the right lighting for your home, don’t worry as we’ve got some great tips from our over 75 years of lighting people’s homes across the world.

6 Lighting Tips to Make Your Home Feel Cozy

1 - Mood Lighting

If you want a cozier space, having the same lighting in every room of your house isn’t an option. Instead, you should aim for a warm glow by putting many table and floor lamps in the designated room.

To get the energy levels up, you’ll need a combination of bright ambient lighting and focused task lighting.

If you want brighter lighting that will help you see things clearly down to the finest detail, place multi-bulb fixtures.

If your goal is to create a romantic ambiance in your home, consider placing light candles with LED lights, or controlled lighting that will allow you to dim the lights as needed.

Using lights as decorative elements in your house can help in creating ambient lighting.

2 - Ambient Lights

This is the basic lighting in a space that plays an important role in creating a diffused, even lighting.

Along with flush and pendant ceiling lights, which provide the best ambient lighting, you can also consider other fixtures like track lighting, chandeliers, recessed ceiling lights, table or floor lamps, light kits on ceiling fans, and wall sconces which do so much more than highlighting a particular area.

3 - The Level of Lighting

The level of lighting is an important part of the whole lighting process. Not adjusting it appropriately can make your rooms look the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. For example, you don’t want too bright light in a small room as that will make the space even smaller.

For spaces and rooms with high ceilings, aim for lighting that will boost the light reflecting on the ceiling. You can achieve this with lamps placed on shelving or on the top of furniture.

Another great way to light up your corners and ceilings is with the help of floor lamps.

4 - Light Up Your Indoor Stairway

Not only does good lighting make your stairs look more stylish, but it can also make them safer especially at night. Add lights to stair risers to light up your stairway and avoid slip and fall accidents.

5 - Type of Light Bulbs

The type of light bulb can make a huge difference. Halogen, LED, and compact fluorescent light bulbs provide a different color temperature, so you have options to choose from when creating the perfect glow for each space in your home.

Generally, you want a light bulb with a warmer glow for rooms with cooler walls, and a cool glow for darker rooms.

6 - Accent Lights

Last but not least, accent lights like table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces can help you make a visual separation in rooms. They allow you to highlight a certain object or feature in a room such as a fireplace, artwork, textured walls, or plants. Higher wattage incandescent bulbs and halogen lamps are perfect for this purpose.

Unlike ambient lighting, this one is secondary lighting that needs to be three to five times brighter.

For example, if a chandelier provides the basic lighting in your dining room, you can place one or two sconces as an accent or secondary lighting in the room.

In summary

Choosing the right lighting in your house can help you make it cozier and more inviting, just like every home is supposed to feel. We hope that our lighting tips will help you turn your house into a home where you will enjoy every moment.
